This Tottenham Hotspur 2013/14 home shirt was made by Under Armour and features Gareth Bale’s #11 nameset. It is an unusual piece from the Bale era because, although Bale appeared in the shirt during its launch and pre-season period, he left Tottenham for Real Madrid before making a competitive appearance for Spurs during the 2013/14 season.
Bale’s presence makes this configuration particularly interesting. He had just completed an extraordinary 2012/13 campaign in which his performances established him among Europe’s leading players, and he retained the #11 shirt as Tottenham prepared for the new season. He was even one of the players used to unveil this 2013/14 kit in July 2013. However, after a summer dominated by transfer negotiations, he joined Real Madrid at the beginning of September and continued wearing #11 in Spain.
Tottenham therefore played the 2013/14 campaign without Bale, eventually finishing sixth in the Premier League during a transitional season that saw André Villas-Boas replaced by Tim Sherwood. His departure was followed by major recruitment, including Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho. This means a Bale #11 version sits in an unusual position historically: it belongs to the first Tottenham kit produced after his spectacular final campaign, but he departed before the competitive season had properly begun.
