This Tottenham Hotspur 2012/13 home shirt was made by Under Armour and features Clint Dempsey’s unusual #2 nameset. The campaign marked the beginning of Tottenham’s five-year partnership with Under Armour, the brand’s first kit-supply agreement with a Premier League club. Dempsey had joined Spurs from Fulham on deadline day in August 2012 and chose #2, a highly unconventional number for an attacking player.
André Villas-Boas took charge for the season, with Dempsey joining a squad featuring Gareth Bale, Mousa Dembélé, Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris. Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League with 72 points, which was their highest Premier League points total at the time, while also reaching the Europa League quarter-finals.
Dempsey spent only this single season at Tottenham, but produced several memorable moments. None was bigger than his first Spurs goal: the decisive strike in a 3–2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in September 2012. It secured Tottenham’s first league victory there since 1989, ending a 23-year wait. He later scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against United at White Hart Lane and finished his only Tottenham campaign with 12 goals in all competitions before leaving for Seattle Sounders in 2013.
For collectors, the Dempsey #2 configuration gives this shirt a very different appeal from the more commonly associated Bale #11 version. The unusual number, Dempsey’s brief one-season spell at White Hart Lane and his connection to the historic Old Trafford victory make it an interesting representation of the 2012/13 Spurs side, while the first-year Under Armour design and Aurasma sponsorship add further period character.
