This is the Manchester City 2009/10 away shirt made by Umbro, shown here with Vieira 24 on the back. It features a dark charcoal/black base, gold detailing on the shoulders and chest, the Manchester City crest with three stars, the Etihad Airways sponsor across the front, and full Barclays Premier League sleeve patches. With Vieira 24 on the back, it gains extra significance, because Patrick Vieira’s short but high-profile spell at City places the shirt right at the start of the club’s rise into a new era.
The design feels understated, sharp, and very Umbro. Rather than leaning on bright contrast or heavy graphics, it keeps things sleek through a dark base with restrained gold accents. That gives the shirt a more mature and almost formal look than many away shirts from the same period. The gold crest and Umbro logo lift it nicely, while the clean body keeps the overall impression elegant rather than flashy. It is a shirt that feels transitional in the best way: still rooted in late-2000s football design, but already pointing toward the more premium look City would increasingly adopt in the years that followed.
This shirt is most closely associated with Manchester City’s 2009/10 season, a pivotal period when the club was building toward becoming a major force in English football. The squad featured players such as Carlos Tevez, Craig Bellamy, Gareth Barry, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Nigel de Jong, Vincent Kompany, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Patrick Vieira. Vieira only joined midway through the season, which makes this nameset especially interesting: it ties the shirt to one of football’s most recognisable midfielders during a very specific and important chapter in City’s evolution. Because of that, it has strong collector appeal as an early modern Manchester City away shirt linked to a major name.
