This is the Ajax 1996/97 home shirt made by Umbro, shown here with Litmanen 10 on the back. It features Ajax’s classic white base with a broad red central panel, the Umbro logo, the Ajax crest, and ABN AMRO as the front sponsor. The Litmanen 10 print is fully correct for the period, as Jari Litmanen remained one of Ajax’s most important players and one of the defining names of the club’s 1990s era.
The design stays true to Ajax’s traditional home identity, but this version is clearly rooted in the mid-1990s. The shirt uses a striped fold-over collar and sleeve cuffs, while both the white and red sections include a subtle tonal graphic pattern that gives the shirt more depth. The large vertical ABN AMRO sponsor inside the central red panel is one of the shirt’s most recognizable details and strongly ties it to this specific Umbro period. Compared with later Ajax shirts, this one feels more classic, more textured, and more unmistakably 1990s.
Ajax used this shirt during the 1996/97 season, when the club was still competing with the core of the great side that had dominated Dutch football and challenged for the European Cup in the years just before. Players such as Jari Litmanen, Edwin van der Sar, Danny Blind, the De Boer brothers, and Marc Overmars are closely linked with this broader period. That makes the Litmanen 10 print especially desirable, as he was one of the team’s standout players and one of the most iconic attacking midfielders in Europe at the time.
Shirt condition: 8.5/10
