Dimitar Berbatov enjoyed a standout second season at Tottenham Hotspur in 2007/08, solidifying his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most elegant and effective forwards.
Berbatov joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2006. After an impressive first year—where he tallied 23 goals in all competitions—expectations were high heading into 2007/08.
Tottenham’s biggest achievement that season came in the 2008 League Cup (Carling Cup), under newly appointed manager Juande Ramos. In the final against Chelsea (February 24, 2008), Spurs trailed 1–0 before Berbatov calmly converted a penalty to level the score. Spurs went on to win 2–1 (after extra time), delivering the club’s first major trophy since 1999. Berbatov’s equalizing penalty was a pivotal moment in the match.
In the Premier League, Berbatov scored 15 goals in 36 appearances during 2007/08. After another prolific season, Berbatov attracted interest from bigger clubs. On deadline day in August 2008, he signed for Manchester United, ending his two-year spell in North London.
