Italy's 2022 home football shirt, manufactured by Puma, features Italian midfielder Marco Verratti #6. Released following Italy's historic UEFA Euro 2020 triumph, the shirt represents the final chapter of Puma's long-standing partnership with the Italian national team. Verratti, a key figure in Italy's European Championship-winning squad, was widely recognised for his exceptional passing ability, technical intelligence and control in midfield. Having spent much of his career at Paris Saint-Germain, he remained one of Italy's most accomplished midfielders during this period.
The shirt features Italy's traditional royal blue colourway with a subtle four-quadrant tonal pattern inspired by the nation's football heritage. Gold detailing appears on the Puma logos, player numbering and Italian Football Federation crest, which is topped by four stars representing Italy's World Cup victories. The collar incorporates green, white and red trim inspired by the Italian flag, while the back features Verratti's name and number 6 in gold with geometric detailing. Puma's dryCELL technology and lightweight construction complete the design.
The 2022 campaign was a difficult period for the Italian national team under Roberto Mancini. Despite entering the year as reigning European champions, Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup following a surprising 1–0 defeat to North Macedonia in the qualification play-offs. However, the team recovered to finish top of their UEFA Nations League group ahead of Hungary, Germany and England, securing a place in the 2023 finals. Verratti remained an important part of Italy's midfield during this transitional period, representing the experience and technical quality of the squad that had conquered Europe the previous year.
