Portugal's 2006 home football shirt, manufactured by Nike, features Cristiano Ronaldo #17 with official FIFA World Cup 2006 sleeve patches. Worn during the tournament in Germany, the shirt represents an important early chapter in Ronaldo's international career, when the 21-year-old Manchester United winger was emerging as one of Europe's most exciting talents. This was also the final major tournament in which Ronaldo wore the number 17 for Portugal before taking over the iconic number 7 following Luís Figo's international retirement.

Portugal enjoyed one of their strongest World Cup campaigns in 2006 under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1966. Ronaldo featured prominently throughout the tournament and scored his first World Cup goal from the penalty spot in a 2–0 group-stage victory over Iran. Portugal subsequently eliminated the Netherlands and England, with Ronaldo converting the decisive penalty in the quarter-final shootout against England. Their campaign ended with a 1–0 semi-final defeat to France, followed by a loss to Germany in the third-place play-off. Portugal's fourth-place finish marked an important milestone for a generation featuring Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Deco and Ricardo Carvalho.
