The 2002/03 home shirt introduced a modernized take on Barcelona’s traditional Blaugrana stripes. The design featured thicker red and blue vertical panels, creating a bold visual identity compared to the thinner stripes of previous years. The 2002/03 season was a transitional one for Barcelona. Under coach Louis van Gaal and later Radomir Antić, the club endured inconsistency in La Liga but made a strong run in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarterfinals. Juan Román Riquelme, the Argentine playmaker, had joined from Boca Juniors that summer.
