Based in Östersund, Sweden, the club had become famous for their remarkable rise in Swedish football under Graham Potter, who led them to prominence in the Allsvenskan (Sweden’s top league) and their successful journey in European competitions. However, 2019 represented a season of transition, particularly following Potter's departure in 2018.
After Graham Potter left Östersund in 2018 to take over as the manager of Swansea City, the club entered a new era under Ian Burchnall, an English coach who took over the managerial role in the summer of 2018. Östersund FK had a mixed performance in the 2019 Allsvenskan season. The team finished 9th, with 40 points from 30 matches, which was a solid position but not as high as the expectations set in previous seasons. This was a step back from their performances in the mid-2010s, when they regularly finished in the top half of the table and even participated in European competitions.
Saman Ghoddos, the Iranian winger/forward remained Östersund’s most important attacking player, contributing with both goals and assists. He was instrumental in keeping Östersund competitive in a challenging season. Another key player was the veteran midfielder, Brwa Nouri, known for his technical ability and leadership.
