Anthony Elanga had a breakthrough season at Manchester United in 2021/22, emerging from the club’s academy to become a regular member of the first-team squad.
Elanga had made his senior debut in the final stretch of the previous season (2020/21) and impressed enough in preseason and training to stay around the first-team setup. Although his initial Premier League appearances in 2021/22 were limited, he remained on the fringes under then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Elanga scored his first 2021/22 Premier League goal in January 2022 against Brentford, showcasing his composure and pace in the final third. One of Elanga’s standout moments came in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg away at Atlético Madrid (February 2022), where he scored a late equalizer in a 1–1 draw. His calm finish underscored his potential to perform on the biggest stages.
By the end of the 2021/22 campaign, Elanga had made 20+ appearances in the Premier League, scoring a couple of goals and providing assists. Manchester United, despite a promising start, endured a challenging season overall, finishing 6th in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League in the Round of 16.
