The 2012/13 season was a historic one for Frank Lampard and Chelsea. On 11 May 2013, Lampard scored twice against Aston Villa to surpass Bobby Tambling's long-standing record of 202 goals, becoming Chelsea's all-time leading scorer with 203 goals. He finished the season with 15 Premier League goals, an exceptional return from midfield. Chelsea finished third in the Premier League and won the UEFA Europa League, defeating Benfica 2–1 in the final in Amsterdam. The campaign also included managerial changes, with Roberto Di Matteo replaced by Rafael Benítez in November 2012.
