Sergio Romero began his professional career at Racing Club in Argentina. Despite limited appearances there, his potential caught the eye of European scouts.
In 2007, he moved to AZ Alkmaar. Under the guidance of manager Louis van Gaal, Romero became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, winning the Eredivisie in the 2008–09 season. Romero transferred to Sampdoria in 2011, helping the team earn promotion back to Serie A.
In 2015, Romero joined Manchester United, where he served primarily as a reliable backup and cup goalkeeper. During his time at United, he won the UEFA Europa League (2016–17), the FA Cup (though not as a starter in the final), and the EFL Cup (2016–17 season).
Sergio Romero’s longevity and reliability have made him a highly respected figure in Argentine football. Even after his long service in Europe, his return to Boca Juniors 2022 underlines his continued importance and leadership as one of Argentina’s most distinguished goalkeepers.
