Umbro - Manchester United 1994/96 Home Football Shirt 'SCHOLES'

This Manchester United 1994/96 home shirt was made by Umbro and features Paul Scholes’ #22 nameset. Worn across the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons, it is one of the most recognisable United shirts of the 1990s and is particularly significant with Scholes #22, the number he adopted for the 1995/96 campaign as the Class of ’92 became increasingly important to Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team. 

The shirt’s defining campaign was 1995/96. United recovered from a difficult start and overturned Newcastle United’s substantial lead at the top of the Premier League to become champions. They then completed the Double by defeating Liverpool 1–0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley through Eric Cantona’s late goal. The season also became synonymous with Ferguson’s emerging young core, with Scholes joined by David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville alongside established figures such as Cantona, Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs.

Scholes wore #22 throughout that breakthrough title-winning season, having previously worn #24. He was still only 21 but had become a genuine first-team player, making 26 Premier League appearances and scoring ten league goals in 1995/96. He also appeared in the FA Cup final victory over Liverpool. The #22 therefore has a particularly strong connection to the beginning of the career that would eventually make Scholes one of United’s defining midfielders.
