This Liverpool 2002/04 home shirt was made by Reebok and features Steven Gerrard’s #17 nameset in the classic Premier League style. The design was worn across both the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons, a particularly important period in Gerrard’s career as he developed from one of Liverpool’s brightest academy graduates into the club captain and central figure of the team. 

The 2002/03 campaign provided the shirt’s biggest trophy moment. Gérard Houllier’s Liverpool reached the League Cup final against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and won 2–0. Gerrard opened the scoring with a long-range strike before Michael Owen secured the victory late on, giving Liverpool their seventh League Cup. The following season Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League, securing Champions League qualification in what proved to be Houllier’s final campaign in charge.

The #17 nameset is particularly significant because it captures Gerrard before he became synonymous with #8. He wore #17 during the early part of this period and was appointed Liverpool captain by Houllier in October 2003, replacing Sami Hyypiä. Gerrard was only 23 at the time, beginning a captaincy that would eventually encompass some of the most famous moments in the club’s modern history.

For collectors, the combination of Gerrard #17, Reebok manufacturing and Carlsberg sponsorship makes this a quintessential early-2000s Liverpool shirt. It represents Gerrard immediately before the #8 era for which he became best known, while its association with the 2003 League Cup triumph and his elevation to club captain gives the shirt additional significance within his Liverpool story.
