This Manchester United 2011/12 home shirt was made by Nike and features Ryan Giggs’ #11 nameset together with UEFA Europa League and Respect sleeve patches. The European detailing makes this a particularly interesting version of the shirt, as United unexpectedly competed in the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group. Giggs remained an important member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side at the age of 38, more than two decades after making his first-team debut. 

The season developed into one of the most dramatic of the Ferguson era. United finished level with Manchester City on 89 points in the Premier League but lost the title on goal difference after City’s extraordinary final-day comeback against Queens Park Rangers. In Europe, United failed to progress from a Champions League group containing Benfica, Basel and Oțelul Galați, dropping into the Europa League before eventually being eliminated by Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Club in the Round of 16.

Giggs continued to defy his age throughout the campaign, making 33 appearances across all competitions and scoring four goals. In September 2011 he scored against Benfica in the Champions League, extending his remarkable record of scoring in consecutive European campaigns. During the season he also signed another contract extension that would take his United career into a 23rd season. His longevity is particularly striking in the context of this squad: he was playing alongside a new generation including Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and a 21-year-old David de Gea.

For collectors, the combination of Giggs #11, Europa League sleeve detailing and Nike’s clean 2011/12 design makes this an unusual version of a Manchester United home shirt. United’s appearances in the competition were rare during the Ferguson era, and the shirt captures Giggs remarkably late in a career that had begun before the Premier League itself existed.
