This Rangers 2005/06 third shirt features Dado Pršo’s #9 nameset in the Scottish Premier League style. The deep navy shirt with Carling sponsorship comes from Pršo’s second season at Ibrox and a campaign that, despite being difficult domestically, produced one of Rangers’ most significant Champions League runs of the era. The 2005/06 third design is documented as the navy alternative used alongside Rangers’ blue home and white away shirts.
The 2005/06 campaign was Alex McLeish’s final season as Rangers manager. Rangers finished third in the Scottish Premier League, but their European campaign was considerably more memorable. They progressed from a Champions League group containing Inter Milan, Porto and Artmedia Bratislava, becoming the first Rangers side to reach the Champions League knockout stage. Their run eventually ended against Villarreal in the Round of 16, with the tie finishing 3–3 on aggregate and the Spanish side progressing on away goals.
Pršo was one of the defining Rangers players of this period. The Croatian striker had arrived from Monaco in 2004 and brought considerable European experience to Ibrox. He was particularly important during the 2005/06 Champions League campaign, scoring as Rangers secured qualification against Anorthosis and then finding the net in the memorable 3–2 group-stage victory over Porto at Ibrox. Against Porto, Pršo scored Rangers’ second goal despite playing with his head heavily bandaged following an earlier collision.
For collectors, the combination of Pršo #9, the Carling sponsor and the relatively uncommon navy third colourway makes this an appealing Rangers shirt from the mid-2000s. Pršo remains strongly associated with this period of the club, while the shirt itself belongs to the season in which Rangers broke new ground by reaching the Champions League knockout stage for the first time.
