This Manchester City 2011/12 away shirt was made by Umbro and features Mario Balotelli’s #45 nameset together with Premier League sleeve patches. The striking red-and-black striped design was inspired by the colours worn by City around 1969 and 1970, when the club won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup. Umbro reinterpreted that history with gold detailing on the crest, branding and Etihad Airways sponsor. 

The 2011/12 campaign became one of the defining seasons in Manchester City’s history. Roberto Mancini’s side battled Manchester United for the Premier League title and entered the final day knowing victory over Queens Park Rangers would secure the championship. Two stoppage-time goals turned a 2–1 deficit into a 3–2 victory, with Sergio Agüero scoring at 93:20 to deliver City’s first league title in 44 years. 

Balotelli was one of the most recognisable figures in that title-winning side. Wearing #45, he scored important goals during the campaign and produced several memorable moments, but his most significant contribution came with virtually the final touch of City’s season. Introduced as a substitute against QPR, Balotelli provided the pass for Agüero’s title-winning goal – remarkably, his only Premier League assist of the entire season. 

The shirt itself also carries an unusually thoughtful piece of design. Umbro constructed the stripes to remain aligned across the body and sleeves when a player stretched out his arms in celebration, directly linking the design to the act of scoring a goal. Combined with the historical inspiration of City’s late-1960s kits, it makes the shirt particularly representative of Umbro’s celebrated period with the club.

For collectors, the combination of Balotelli #45, Premier League sleeve patches, the red-and-black Umbro design and its connection to the dramatic 2011/12 title-winning season gives this shirt particular significance. Balotelli’s role in the 93:20 goal adds another layer to a shirt from one of the most important moments in modern Premier League history.
