This Barcelona 2011/12 away shirt was made by Nike and features Lionel Messi’s #10 nameset together with an LFP sleeve patch. The shirt comes from Pep Guardiola’s fourth and final season as Barcelona manager and from one of the most extraordinary individual campaigns of Messi’s career. This example also carries the gold FIFA World Champions 2011 badge, celebrating Barcelona’s victory at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.
Barcelona collected four major trophies during the campaign: the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Copa del Rey. They defeated Real Madrid over two legs in the Spanish Super Cup, Porto 2–0 in the UEFA Super Cup and Santos 4–0 in the Club World Cup final. Guardiola’s final trophy arrived with a 3–0 victory over Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final. Barcelona finished second in La Liga and reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Chelsea.
For Messi, 2011/12 produced numbers that remain remarkable even by his standards. He scored 73 goals in all competitions, including 50 in La Liga, setting a then-record for goals in a European club season and establishing the La Liga single-season scoring record at the time. He finished as both Barcelona’s league and overall top scorer, while playing alongside a generation featuring Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Carles Puyol, Dani Alves, David Villa and new arrival Alexis Sánchez.
