This Aston Villa 2007/08 home shirt was made by Nike and features Olof Mellberg’s #4 nameset together with Barclays Premier League sleeve patches. The shirt comes from Mellberg’s final season at Villa Park, bringing an end to a seven-year spell in which the Swedish defender became one of the club’s most respected players of the modern era.

The design marked the beginning of Aston Villa’s partnership with Nike and stays true to the club’s traditional colours, combining a deep claret body with contrasting sky-blue sleeves. The white Nike Swoosh sits opposite the newly introduced Villa crest, while the distinctive 32Red.com sponsor dominates the front. Small details including the AVFC banner near the hem and lion beneath the back collar complete a particularly recognisable late-2000s Villa design.

Under Martin O’Neill, Villa enjoyed an impressive 2007/08 campaign and finished sixth in the Premier League. The side featured an exciting group including Gareth Barry, Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor, John Carew and Martin Laursen, establishing the foundations for Villa’s run of three consecutive sixth-place finishes during one of their strongest Premier League periods of the 2000s.

Mellberg’s final season makes the shirt particularly significant. After more than 200 appearances for Villa, he agreed to join Juventus at the end of the campaign. His final home match was designated “Olof Mellberg Day”, but his farewell became even more memorable at West Ham on the final day, when he gave shirts to each of the approximately 3,200 travelling Villa supporters as a thank-you for their support.

For collectors, the combination of Mellberg #4, Premier League sleeve detailing, 32Red sponsor and Nike’s first Aston Villa home design gives this shirt a particularly strong connection to the era.
