Description
This Manchester United 2022/23 away shirt was made by adidas and features Cristiano Ronaldo’s #7 nameset together with Carabao Cup and DXC Technology sleeve patches. The predominantly white design combines black and red detailing across the shoulders, collar and cuffs, while the club crest sits inside a black shield. A subtle engineered pattern runs through the fabric, with adidas drawing heavily on Manchester United shirts of the 1990s for the overall aesthetic.
The 2022/23 campaign marked the beginning of Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford. United ultimately finished third in the Premier League, reached the FA Cup final and won the League Cup, ending a six-year wait for a major trophy. Players including Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and new arrivals Casemiro and Lisandro Martínez became central to the team during the season.
For Ronaldo, however, this shirt belongs to the final chapter of his Manchester United career. Having returned to Old Trafford in 2021, he retained the iconic #7 for 2022/23 but made only a limited number of appearances under Ten Hag before leaving the club in November 2022. His departure midway through the campaign means Ronaldo versions of the 2022/23 shirts are closely tied to a particularly brief period in his second spell at United.
This example is especially distinctive because of its cup configuration. The Carabao Cup sleeve patch separates it from the more commonly seen Premier League version, while the Ronaldo #7 print connects the shirt to the opening months of the competition United would eventually go on to win. The white, black and red colour scheme also made this one of the most recognisable adidas United away designs of the period.
For collectors, the combination of Ronaldo #7, Carabao Cup detailing and the significance of his final season at Old Trafford makes this an interesting piece from the closing chapter of his Manchester United career.
