This Manchester United 2015/16 third shirt was made by adidas and features Wayne Rooney’s #10 nameset together with Barclays Premier League sleeve patches. This example is the long-sleeve version of the black third kit from the season adidas returned as United’s kit supplier for the first time since 1991/92, and comes from Rooney’s second campaign as club captain.

The 2015/16 season was Louis van Gaal’s final campaign as Manchester United manager. United finished fifth in the Premier League but ended the season with silverware by winning the FA Cup for the first time since 2004. In the Wembley final against Crystal Palace, Jason Puncheon put Palace ahead before Juan Mata equalised and Jesse Lingard scored a spectacular extra-time winner to secure a 2–1 victory. Rooney captained the side throughout the 120 minutes and lifted the FA Cup for the first time in his career.

Rooney remained one of the central figures in a changing United side that also featured Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, David de Gea and a breakthrough Marcus Rashford. He scored twice during the FA Cup run, including against Sheffield United and Derby County. In January 2016, his winner at Anfield against Liverpool became his 176th Premier League goal for United, at the time setting a new record for the most Premier League goals scored for a single club.

For collectors, the combination of Rooney #10, long sleeves, Premier League sleeve patches and the black-and-red colourway makes this one of the more distinctive shirts from his later Manchester United career. It also represents an important transition point for the club: the return of adidas, the emergence of Rashford and Rooney finally adding the FA Cup to an already extensive collection of honours.
