This Liverpool 2008/10 home shirt was made by adidas and features Fernando Torres’ #9 European nameset together with UEFA Europa League and Respect sleeve patches. The shirt was originally introduced for 2008/09 and retained for 2009/10, but this particular configuration is tied specifically to the latter campaign, when Liverpool entered the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group. Torres was one of the defining players of this Liverpool era and produced several important European performances during the season.
Liverpool’s 2009/10 campaign proved difficult domestically, with Rafael Benítez’s side finishing seventh in the Premier League after having challenged for the title the previous season. Europe nevertheless provided a substantial run. After dropping into the Europa League, Liverpool progressed past Unirea Urziceni, Lille and Benfica before reaching the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Atlético Madrid on away goals after the tie finished 2–2 on aggregate.
Torres was particularly influential during that Europa League run. He scored twice as Liverpool overturned a first-leg deficit to beat Lille 3–0 at Anfield in the Round of 16, then struck another brace in the 4–1 quarter-final victory over Benfica. Despite injuries restricting his season, Torres remained prolific, scoring 22 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions. His partnership with Steven Gerrard and combination of pace, movement and finishing made him one of the most feared forwards in European football during this period.
For collectors, this version has an especially strong connection to Liverpool’s 2009/10 European campaign. The combination of Torres #9, Europa League sleeve detailing, Carlsberg sponsorship and the “This Is Anfield” collar makes it a distinctive variation of an already iconic late-2000s Liverpool design.
