This Liverpool 2006/08 home shirt was made by adidas and features Xabi Alonso’s #14 nameset together with Barclays Premiership sleeve patches. Introduced for the 2006/07 campaign and retained for 2007/08, the shirt comes from a period in which Rafael Benítez’s Liverpool were regular contenders in the latter stages of the Champions League. Alonso was central to that side, forming part of an outstanding midfield alongside players such as Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano.
Its first season was particularly memorable in Europe. Liverpool reached the 2007 Champions League final in Athens after eliminating Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea during the knockout rounds. The final produced a rematch of the extraordinary 2005 meeting with AC Milan, but this time Milan prevailed 2–1. Alonso featured in all 13 of Liverpool’s Champions League matches during the campaign, tying for the most appearances by any player in that season’s competition. The shirt remained in use for 2007/08, when Liverpool again made a deep European run, reaching the Champions League semi-finals before being eliminated by Chelsea.
Alonso’s #14 is particularly synonymous with Liverpool’s European side of this period. The Spanish midfielder had already written himself into the club’s history by scoring the equaliser during the 2005 Champions League final comeback against AC Milan, and his exceptional passing range made him a defining part of Benítez’s midfield. He spent five seasons at Anfield from 2004 to 2009, making 210 appearances and scoring 19 goals before joining Real Madrid.
For collectors, the combination of Alonso #14, classic Carlsberg sponsorship, adidas styling and the shirt’s association with Liverpool’s 2007 Champions League final run makes this one of the standout Liverpool designs of the 2000s. The Barclays Premiership sleeve patches on this example further place it firmly within an era featuring Alonso, Gerrard, Carragher and, during the shirt’s second season, the arrival of Fernando Torres.
