This Germany 2018 home shirt was made by adidas and features Mesut Özil’s iconic #10 nameset together with the official 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and FIFA Living Football sleeve patches. The gold FIFA World Champions badge sits centrally on the chest, recognising Germany’s triumph in Brazil four years earlier as they arrived in Russia as defending world champions.
The design is a modern reinterpretation of Germany’s famous 1990 World Cup shirt. A predominantly white base is broken up by a bold geometric graphic across the chest, created from varying black and grey horizontal lines, while black adidas Three Stripes run along the shoulders. The four stars above the German crest represent the country’s four World Cup titles, with the monochrome palette giving one of Germany’s most recognisable designs a distinctly modern appearance.
Germany entered the 2018 World Cup with expectations of defending their title but endured one of the biggest disappointments in the country's tournament history. Joachim Löw's side lost their opening game 1–0 to Mexico before Toni Kroos' dramatic late free kick secured a 2–1 victory over Sweden. A 2–0 defeat against South Korea then eliminated Germany at the group stage.
Özil started and played the full 90 minutes against both Mexico and South Korea, having been left out of the victory over Sweden. The tournament proved to be the final chapter of his international career, with the South Korea match becoming his last appearance for Germany. He retired from international football the following month after 92 caps and 23 goals, having been an integral part of the team that won the 2014 World Cup.
