This Tottenham Hotspur 2012/13 home shirt was made by Under Armour and features Gareth Bale’s #11 nameset. It comes from Under Armour’s first season supplying Tottenham and, more importantly, from the campaign in which Bale produced the defining season of his first spell at the club before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
André Villas-Boas took charge that season, with a squad featuring Bale alongside Mousa Dembélé, Aaron Lennon, Jermain Defoe, Clint Dempsey, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris. Tottenham collected 72 Premier League points, their highest total of the Premier League era at the time, but narrowly missed Champions League qualification by finishing fifth. They also reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Bale’s season is what gives this shirt much of its significance. He scored 26 goals in all competitions, including 21 in the Premier League, and produced a succession of spectacular long-range goals and late winners. His performances earned him an exceptional collection of individual honours: PFA Players’ Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season. He became only the third player at the time to win both major PFA awards in the same season.
For collectors, the Bale #11 configuration makes this one of the most significant Tottenham shirts of the early 2010s. It represents his final season before leaving for Real Madrid and captures the campaign in which he developed from one of the Premier League’s most exciting players into one of European football’s biggest stars. Combined with the distinctive first-year Under Armour design and Aurasma sponsorship, it has a particularly strong connection to a single player and season.
