Umbro - West Ham United 2016/17 Away Football Shirt 'PAYET'

This is the Umbro – West Ham United 2016/17 away football shirt, shown here in the long-sleeve version with Payet 27 on the back. It is one of the cleanest West Ham away shirts of the modern era, built around an all-white base with subtle claret and blue trim, the betway sponsor on the chest, and the special crest marking the club’s first season at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. With Dimitri Payet 27 on the back, it becomes even more tied to a very specific and memorable West Ham period.

What makes this shirt stand out is how restrained it is. West Ham kits can sometimes lean heavily into claret-and-blue detailing, but this one keeps things much more minimal. The white body gives it a sharp, almost elegant look, while the thin sky blue shoulder accents and claret collar/cuff details give it just enough club identity without cluttering the design. The special crest embroidery is an important detail too, because it roots the shirt directly in the club’s first season after the move from Upton Park. That gives it more historical weight than a standard away shirt.

The Payet 27 print adds most of the emotional pull. Dimitri Payet was the defining creative force around this period and one of the most technically brilliant players to wear a West Ham shirt in the Premier League era. Even though his relationship with the club ended controversially, his connection to this era is still unmistakable. That makes this shirt especially interesting from a collector’s point of view, because it captures a very specific moment: West Ham in transition, with a new stadium identity, but still carrying one of the league’s most watchable players.

From a collecting perspective, this shirt works because it combines several strong elements at once: a clean and wearable away design, a club-transition season marker through the commemorative crest text, and one of the most recognisable player names from that West Ham era. It is not loud, but it is very distinctive in a quieter way, and that usually ages well.
