This Rangers 2011/12 home shirt was made by Umbro and features Mervan Çelik’s #24 nameset. The long-sleeve version is particularly striking, with the classic royal-blue base, Tennent’s sponsorship and Rangers crest accompanied by the five stars used above the intertwined RFC monogram during this period. The 2011/12 design was created with a white V-neck collar and white shoulder inserts edged with red, giving it a clean interpretation of Rangers’ traditional colours.
The 2011/12 campaign became one of the most consequential seasons in Rangers history. Ally McCoist had succeeded Walter Smith as manager and Rangers were defending the Scottish Premier League title, but the season was ultimately overshadowed by the club entering administration in February 2012. Rangers received a ten-point deduction and eventually finished second behind Celtic. The squad included Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Steven Naismith, Nikica Jelavić, Lee McCulloch and Carlos Bocanegra.
The Mervan #24 nameset makes this example considerably more unusual. Gothenburg-born Mervan Çelik joined Rangers from GAIS in January 2012 after an impressive 2011 Allsvenskan season in which he scored 14 league goals. His Rangers career was exceptionally brief: he made his competitive debut in a 4–0 victory over Hibernian on 28 January and made just six competitive appearances for the club — five as a substitute in the league and one start in the Scottish Cup — without scoring. His final Rangers appearance came against Hearts on 3 March, before he returned to GAIS later in 2012.
For collectors, that short spell is precisely what makes the configuration interesting. Rather than featuring one of the more commonly encountered Rangers names from the season, the Mervan #24 nameset captures a very specific moment connecting Rangers with Swedish football. Combined with the long sleeves, Tennent’s sponsorship and the significance of the turbulent 2011/12 campaign, it makes for an unusual piece from the final Rangers season before the club began again in the lower divisions.
