This is the Manchester United 1997/99 away shirt made by Umbro, shown here with Beckham 7 on the back. It features a white base, the Umbro logo, the club crest in the black shield format, and Sharp Viewcam as the front sponsor. The shirt also has the distinctive black and red chest bands, plus matching trim on the collar and shoulders. The Beckham 7 print is fully relevant for the period, as David Beckham wore number 7 and was one of United’s key players in these seasons.
The design is very characteristic of late-1990s Umbro shirts. The base is white, but the shirt is broken up by bold horizontal striping across the chest and strong black-red detailing around the collar and shoulder line. The fabric also uses a subtle tonal jacquard pattern with repeated club-themed detailing, which was a common Umbro feature in that era. Compared with simpler earlier away shirts, this one feels more graphic and more obviously tied to late-1990s football design.
Manchester United used this away shirt across the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons. It is especially associated with the end of the 1990s under Sir Alex Ferguson, when the club had players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Peter Schmeichel, and Jaap Stam. Because it spans the period leading into the 1998/99 treble season, it has strong collector appeal. The Beckham 7 print makes it even more desirable, as it links one of the club’s most recognizable shirts from the era with one of its most iconic players.
