The 1996/98 third shirt by Umbro features a bold royal blue base, highlighted with sharp navy and white geometric trims across the shoulders and upper chest. The collar is structured, combining a navy central band with contrasting white and blue stripes—giving it a distinctive 90s aesthetic. The bold blue silhouette, accented by angular trims, makes this kit stand out from United’s traditional red, offering a fresh alternative used primarily in away or European matches. The logo, sponsor, and badge are directly embossed into the fabric rather than added separately, giving the shirt a smoother feel and a cleaner look.
Introduced ahead of the 1996/97 season as United’s third kit, this blue shirt was worn in various Premier League, Cup, and European cup matches. It remained in use through the 1997/98 campaign. Nicky Butt, squad number 8, was a key figure during this period, contributing to midfield battles and United’s domestic success; having his name and number reinforces the era’s connection to rising academy talents making big impacts. Notable matches with this kit include European away fixtures and key domestic clashes.
