This is the Manchester United 1996/98 Home Shirt by Umbro, featuring Eric Cantona #7. Worn across two seasons, this is one of the most iconic shirts in football history, forever associated with Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United and the final chapter of Eric Cantona's legendary career.
Produced by Umbro, the shirt features the brand's classic late-1990s construction with lightweight polyester fabric and subtle detailing throughout. The famous Sharp sponsor sits proudly beneath the embroidered club crest and Umbro logo, while the contrasting black-and-white polo collar gives the shirt a timeless look. Tonal geometric graphics across the sleeves, Manchester United motifs and the "Theatre of Dreams" detail near the hem make it one of Umbro's most celebrated football shirt designs.
The shirt was worn during the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons. In its first campaign, Manchester United retained the Premier League title and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, with the emerging Class of '92 becoming established alongside experienced stars. The following season saw United narrowly miss out on the league title to Arsenal, setting the stage for the historic Treble-winning campaign the year after. This shirt therefore represents an important transitional period in one of the greatest dynasties in football history.
This shirt features Eric Cantona #7, the inspirational captain and cultural icon who transformed Manchester United after arriving from Leeds United in 1992. Revered for his vision, creativity and match-winning ability, Cantona became the symbol of Ferguson's early success and helped establish United as England's dominant force. He shocked the football world by retiring at the end of the 1996/97 season at just 30 years old, making this one of the final shirts of his illustrious career. His legendary number 7 would later be inherited by David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and other club greats.
For collectors, the Cantona #7 version is among the most desirable Manchester United shirts ever produced. Combining one of Umbro's finest designs with one of football's greatest icons, it remains an essential piece for collectors of Premier League and Manchester United memorabilia.
