Inter Milan's 1996/97 home football shirt, manufactured by Umbro, features Argentine defender Javier Zanetti #4. The shirt comes from Zanetti's second season at Inter following his arrival from Banfield in 1995. Already establishing himself as a reliable and versatile presence in the squad, Zanetti would go on to become one of the most iconic figures in the club's history. Over 19 seasons, he made a record 858 competitive appearances for Inter, captained the team through its most successful modern era and became synonymous with loyalty and consistency.
The 1996/97 season was an important campaign for Inter Milan under manager Roy Hodgson. The club finished third in Serie A, securing qualification for the following season's UEFA Cup. Inter also reached the UEFA Cup final against Schalke 04, with both legs ending 1–0 to the respective home teams before the German side won the penalty shootout at San Siro. Zanetti was a regular presence throughout the campaign, continuing his development into one of Europe's most dependable defenders. The season also marked the beginning of an era that would eventually see Zanetti captain Inter to an unprecedented Italian treble in 2009/10.
