This is the Sunderland 2000/01 home shirt made by Nike, shown here with Schwarz 20 on the back. It features Sunderland’s classic red and white striped base, black Nike branding, the club crest on the chest, and the Reg Vardy sponsor across the front. The shirt also uses a black V-neck collar with red trim, while the bold sleeve striping and Premier League nameset place it clearly within Sunderland’s top-flight period at the turn of the millennium.
The design feels unmistakably late-1990s to early-2000s Nike. The red and white stripes are kept clean and traditional through the body, but the angled sleeve graphics and sharper collar shape give it a more modern, more aggressive edge than many earlier Sunderland shirts. It keeps the club’s visual identity intact, yet adds just enough stylistic flair to make it feel distinctly of its era. The Schwarz 20 nameset suits the shirt especially well, because it adds personality from one of Sunderland’s most recognizable players of that period and gives the overall look a stronger match-worn character.
This shirt is most closely associated with Sunderland’s 2000/01 Premier League season, when the squad featured players such as Kevin Phillips, Niall Quinn, Stefan Schwarz, Gavin McCann, Jody Craddock, Thomas Sørensen, and Julio Arca. Sunderland were still highly competitive in the top flight during this period, coming off the momentum of their strong return to the Premier League under Peter Reid. Schwarz was an experienced and respected presence in midfield, and because of that the Schwarz 20 print gives the shirt added collector appeal. It stands out as a strong early-2000s Sunderland shirt from one of the club’s most memorable modern top-flight eras.
