Manchester United 2013/14 away shirt by Nike — the dark navy and black tartan/check pattern that divided opinions when it dropped. Sponsored by AON, squarely in the post-SAF transition era.
The design was a modern take on a heritage pattern, nodding to traditional British check fabrics. Up close, the tonal grid gives the shirt depth; from a distance it reads almost black. Clean white swoosh and sponsor keep the front balanced.
With Rooney 10 on the back, this lands in a very specific moment. 2013/14 was David Moyes’ only season in charge — turbulent, transitional, but Rooney remained central. He signed a new contract that year and carried much of the attacking responsibility.
It’s not a “glory era” shirt — which actually makes it interesting. Transitional seasons often become cult pieces over time, especially with a Rooney 10 print attached.
