This is the Nike England 2014 Away Football Shirt, featuring Steven Gerrard #4 and FIFA World Cup 2014 sleeve patches. Released for the tournament in Brazil, Nike created a traditional red England away shirt with fine tonal pinstripes that form a subtle interpretation of the St George’s Cross when viewed from a distance. The design is finished with a white Nike Swoosh and the Three Lions crest with England’s World Cup winners’ star above it.
This example features Gerrard #4 on the reverse with the smaller #4 on the chest, together with the FIFA World Cup Brazil and Football for Hope sleeve patches. Gerrard captained England at the 2014 World Cup, his third and final World Cup for the national team. Interestingly, despite being designed for Brazil 2014, England did not actually wear the red away shirt during their three matches at the tournament.
The shirt represents the closing chapter of Gerrard’s England career. The Liverpool midfielder earned 114 senior caps and captained his country through the 2012 European Championship and 2014 World Cup before retiring from international football shortly after the tournament.
