The shirt represents the Netherlands' 1994 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States, although Van Basten did not participate in the tournament due to a persistent ankle injury that ultimately ended his playing career.

The 1994 World Cup marked a transitional period for Dutch football. Without Van Basten, the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals before losing 3–2 to eventual champions Brazil. Van Basten remains one of the country's greatest players, having helped the Netherlands win UEFA Euro 1988 and claimed three Ballon d'Or awards during his remarkable career.
