This Newcastle United 2000/01 away shirt was made by adidas and features Alan Shearer’s iconic #9 nameset together with Premier League sleeve patches. The shirt comes from Sir Bobby Robson’s first full season in charge at St James’ Park and captures a classic early-2000s Newcastle era built around Shearer, Gary Speed, Nolberto Solano and Kieron Dyer.
Newcastle finished 11th in the Premier League during the 2000/01 campaign. It was ultimately a transitional season for Robson’s side, with injuries preventing the team from building sustained momentum, but the foundations were being established for the dramatic improvement that followed. Many of the players from this squad would remain central to the team that finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League the following season.
Shearer had retired from international football following Euro 2000 to concentrate on Newcastle, but his 2000/01 campaign was heavily disrupted by a persistent knee problem. He was limited to 19 Premier League appearances and five league goals, making this a comparatively unusual Shearer season compared with the prolific campaigns that surrounded it. He returned to form spectacularly in 2001/02, scoring 23 league goals as Newcastle finished fourth.
For collectors, the combination of Shearer #9, Premier League sleeve detailing, the classic ntl: sponsor and adidas’ black-and-sky-blue design makes this a particularly nostalgic Newcastle shirt.
