The Adidas Newcastle United 1997/99 Home Football Shirt is one of the defining Premier League shirts of the late 1990s. Featuring the iconic black and white stripes, the classic Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor and Alan Shearer #9nameset, it represents one of the club's most memorable modern eras and one of English football's greatest goalscorers.
Manufactured by Adidas, the shirt was worn across the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons. It features a subtle tonal jacquard pattern woven into the white stripes, embroidered club crest, oversized Newcastle Brown Ale sponsor and the signature three stripes running down the sleeves. The long-sleeve version is particularly sought after by collectors, closely matching what many players wore during the colder months at St James' Park.
Alan Shearer had returned to his hometown club in 1996 for a then world-record transfer fee and quickly became the face of Newcastle United. Wearing the famous number 9 shirt, he continued to establish himself as one of the Premier League's most clinical strikers, combining powerful finishing, aerial dominance and exceptional leadership. Shearer would go on to become the Premier League's all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals, cementing his legendary status in English football.
During these seasons Newcastle competed in both domestic and European competitions under managers Kenny Dalglish and later Ruud Gullit. Although silverware proved elusive, the team remained one of England's biggest attractions, boasting players such as David Batty, Gary Speed, Rob Lee, Temuri Ketsbaia and Shay Given alongside their talismanic captain. The club also reached the 1998 FA Cup Final, adding another memorable chapter to this era.
Today, the 1997/99 Newcastle United home shirt is considered one of the club's greatest ever designs. Its timeless striped aesthetic, historic Newcastle Brown Ale sponsorship and association with Alan Shearer make it one of the most collectible Premier League shirts of the 1990s and a must-have for football shirt enthusiasts.
