This Manchester United 2015/16 home shirt was made by adidas and features Anthony Martial’s #9 nameset together with FA Cup sleeve detailing. The season marked adidas’ return as United’s kit supplier for the first time since 1991/92, while Martial arrived from Monaco on deadline day and immediately became one of the most exciting players in Louis van Gaal’s squad.
United finished fifth in the Premier League in 2015/16, but the campaign ended with their first FA Cup triumph since 2004. They defeated Everton 2–1 in the semi-final before beating Crystal Palace 2–1 after extra time at Wembley, with Juan Mata cancelling out Jason Puncheon’s opener before Jesse Lingard scored the winner. Martial started the final and played the full 120 minutes.
Martial’s debut season is a major part of this shirt’s appeal. Still only 19 when he arrived, he famously came off the bench against Liverpool at Old Trafford and scored a superb solo goal on his debut in a 3–1 victory. He went on to finish as United’s leading scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League. He was also decisive in the FA Cup run, scoring a stoppage-time winner against Everton at Wembley to send United into the final.
For collectors, the combination of Martial #9 and FA Cup sleeve detailing makes this a particularly strong configuration of the 2015/16 home shirt.
