This Liverpool 2008/10 home shirt was made by adidas and features Steven Gerrard’s #8 European nameset together with Champions League sleeve detailing, including Liverpool’s five-time European champions badge. Introduced for the 2008/09 season and retained for 2009/10, the shirt is particularly associated with the Gerrard–Fernando Torres partnership and Liverpool’s serious Premier League title challenge under Rafael Benítez.
The 2008/09 campaign was the standout season for this shirt. Liverpool finished second in the Premier League after accumulating 86 points and losing only twice, while producing memorable victories including a 4–1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. In Europe, Liverpool eliminated Real Madrid 5–0 on aggregate in the Champions League Round of 16, including a dominant 4–0 victory at Anfield, before an extraordinary quarter-final against Chelsea ended 7–5 on aggregate.
Gerrard was at the centre of that campaign and produced one of the finest seasons of his Liverpool career. He scored 24 goals across all competitions and was named the FWA Footballer of the Year. His Champions League performances were especially impressive: Gerrard scored seven times in the competition, including twice in the 4–0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield. Alongside Torres, Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, he formed the core of a Liverpool side that came extremely close to ending the club’s long wait for a league title.
For collectors, the combination of Gerrard #8, European sleeve detailing, the five-time winners badge, Carlsberg sponsorship and the “This Is Anfield” collar detail makes this one of the standout Liverpool shirts of the late 2000s. It is particularly evocative of Gerrard at his peak and of a 2008/09 Liverpool side that produced some of the club’s most memorable performances of the Benítez era.
