This is the Germany 2008 away shirt. The giveaway is the design itself: the bold red body with the wide black central stripe was introduced for UEFA Euro 2008, where Germany reached the final under Joachim Löw. The FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 qualifiers patch was later added and reflects its use during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
This away kit is one of Adidas' most memorable Germany designs of the modern era. The deep red base, black central panel and gold detailing draw directly from the German national colours while offering a far more aggressive and contemporary look than the traditionally green or black away kits that preceded it. The centrally positioned DFB crest, flanked by three stars representing Germany's World Cup triumphs in 1954, 1974 and 1990, creates a striking symmetrical aesthetic that has become iconic among collectors.
Michael Ballack's association with this shirt makes it particularly desirable. As captain, midfield leader and one of Germany's defining players of the 2000s, Ballack wore this design throughout the Euro 2008 campaign and during the road to South Africa 2010. His number 13 became synonymous with a German side that combined experienced leaders such as Ballack, Lahm and Klose with emerging talents including Schweinsteiger, Özil and Müller.
The official FIFA World Cup 2010 Qualifiers sleeve patch adds another layer of authenticity and historical context. Rather than commemorating the tournament itself, it links the shirt to Germany's qualification matches, a campaign in which Ballack played a central role before injury ultimately denied him a place at the finals.
Among Germany shirts of the Adidas era, the 2008 away kit is widely regarded as one of the strongest designs ever produced. The combination of the bold colour scheme, central crest, Ballack nameset and qualification patch makes it a standout piece from one of the most important transitional periods in German football history.
